the boss and major zero propose the idea of a unit dedicated to covert missions, manned only by personnel with training in intel gathering and spec ops. they name it 'FOX'.

president kennedy gives his famous "we choose to go to the moon" speech in texas. john and many other servicemen are crowded around one of the few free radios their camp can spare to listen to the speech. although john himself is impartial to such a development, many of his friends and comrades are unhappy with the decision.

the cuban missile crisis takes place. for 13 days, the US and the soviets were in a stand-off, with potential all-out nuclear war ever present in the background. it ended on october 28th, when kruschev publicly announced that he would move all missiles out of cuba.
02NOV1963.
a few days before november 2nd, john and python are tasked by the CIA to assassinate president ngo dihn diem. the mission went awry, ending technically in a success, but at the price of python being shot. while john was able to get python back to a medic, he was later told his friend had died.

john is shipped back to the states due to his superiors believing his morale may have hit bottom at the death of his partner.

major zero meets with john to try and recruit him into FOX. it would terminate his position as a green beret and he would have to learn to work solo with minimal support. when told that FOX is a group co-founded by the boss, though, john doesn't hesitate to take the job.

after several months of training and preparing, the FOX unit is allowed to perform their first field test to determine whether they can acknowledged as a formal branch of the US military. FOX's virtuous mission is green-lighted and john is flown to russia.
24AUG1964.
at dawn, virtuous mission commences in tselinoyarsk, russia. the world's first HALO jump is also documented, with john as its first tester. john earns his codename, naked snake, which would endure as a tradition for FOX operative well after he retires. the boss and john are reunited briefly before the mission ultimately ends in failure. the boss defects to the soviet union, taking sokolov with her. for his troubles, john's arm is broken by his mentor, followed by being thrown off a suspension bridge above a raging river. john escapes with his life and is again exposed to radiation fallout when volgin launches a mini-nuke at sokolov's lab. later that night, john is finally rescued and taken back to the states.

john is placed in intensive care back in washington and is placed under house arrest while the US government tried to decide who to pin the blame on for the boss' defection. when he is lucid enough, he is bombarded with questions and threatened with possible execution if he doesn't cooperate.

four days later, john and the FOX unit are pardoned for their involvement in the virtuous mission under the condition that they return to tselinoyarsk, eliminate the boss, and retrieve sokolov. if they fail this time, all that will be waiting for them is a firing squad.
30AUG1964.
despite not completely recovering from his first ordeal in tselinoyarsk, john is flown back to tselinoyarsk. after crash-landing at 11:30 PM on august 30th and running into the boss once again, operation snake eater commences. that same night, he makes his way to sokolov's lab where he is supposed to rendevous with KGB operative ADAM. who he meets instead is EVA.
31AUG1964.
the next morning, as john prepared to depart to sokolov's last known location, he makes his first encounter with major ocelot, later revolver ocelot and one of the only men who stayed loyal to big boss. after defeating him, and thus fueling ocelot's obsession with snake, john moved on to his goal. along the way, john ran into major ocelot once more and the pain, a cobra unit member. eventually, he arrives at graniny gorki, a weapons lab, and meets dr. granin, who introduces him to the concept of a 'metal gear'. granin also parts with information about the shagohod, sokolov's new location, and the philosopher's legacy. the day ends with a harrowing encounter with the fear, another cobra unit member.

on the morning of september 1st, john becomes entangled in a sniper battle with the end, who he manages to kill after much struggle. he makes his way up the mountains to meet up with EVA a second time, wherein she tells him how to infiltrate groznyj grad and that she had secured a WIG for their escape. while on his way to the fortress he is faced with the fury, who he also manages to kill. afterward, john manages to successfully infiltrate groznyj grad and finds sokolov. before he is able to complete the rescue part of his mission, though, volgin intercepts their meeting, as well as the boss making an appearance minutes later. through the combined efforts of volgin and the boss, john is beaten unconscious and imprisoned. captured by the enemy, he suffers torture at the hands of volgin and almost gets his eyes cut out by his mentor. he still manages to lose an eye when a stray bullet from ocelot's revolver ruptures it, an effect of trying to save EVA, disguised as tatyana. the day ends with john's escape from groznyj grad, his run-in with the sorrow, and his eventual meet-up with EVA once again.

with dawn comes the final stages of operation snake eater. john eventually makes his way back to groznyj grad to destroy the shaghod and subdue the boss. he is spotted by volgin, the boss, and ocelot before he can blow the C3 he had armed in the shagohod hangar. eventually, john is pitted again volgin, with some intermittent backup from ocelot. he manages to subdue volgin, sparing his life only because he and EVA must escape the hangar before it's destroyed. what takes place after is an arduous battle with volgin, now piloting the shagohod, who seems relentless in his goal to kill snake. with EVA's help, the two finally kill volgin and destroy the shagohod in the process, making their way out to where the WIG lies in wait. despite EVA telling john that he shouldn't, and doesn't, have to kill the boss, that they could just leave, he knows he must finish his mission. john and the boss reunite for the final time and engage in a battle they both know will mean the end of one of their lives. the mission wraps up with john taking his mentor's life, EVA helping john escape on the WIG, and a final fight between him and ocelot. operation snake eater is a success, with an extremely steep cost.

after a night shared with EVA in their alaskan safe house, john awakens to a recording left by her. he learns about who she really was, what her mission was, and the real reason behind the boss' defection. devastated, john prepared to head back to the states.

an award ceremony with current president johnson was held in john's honor, for preventing nuclear war. he is awarded the title big boss. john stays for no longer than he has to and refuses to shake anyone's hand (besides the president's) and talks to no one before unexpectedly leaving the ceremony. that same day, john visits his mentor one last time, at her grave in arlington.

john resigns from FOX and requests to be discharged from the military the same day. eventually, he is discharged honorably, but with "failure to adapt" written in his record as the reason.

his life as a civilian doesn't work out. the call of battle proves to be too much and john finds himself leaving america to become a mercenary. although john is a legend on the battlefield, known as big boss, no one knows what he looks like, allowing him to travel in near anonymity. when people realize who he is, he refuses to be called 'big boss' and continues to go by his codename 'snake'.

wandering from conflict to conflict, john eventually ends up taking part in the mozambique war of independence. he is hired by portugal's government to hunt down and kill a soldier known as Frank Jaeger, a FRELIMO fighter who has been assassinating top brass in Portugal's forces. while john does manage to track frank, he is surprised to learn that frank jaeger is an 11-year-old war orphan. john subdues the child soldier and falsely reports back to portugal that frank jaeger is dead. frank and john bond for the short time they are together before frank is shipped to the states, with the hopes that he can have a better life.

the FOX unit goes renegade, the revolt led by two members, gene aka viper and cunningham aka boa. several hours later, major zero was placed under arrest under suspicion of being a possible conspirator. john was also considered a possible conspirator, but his location was currently unknown to the US government.

john is captured by renegade FOX members, who ambush him out in the field somewhere in africa. 12 hours after being drugged, john wakes up in a cell on the san heironymo peninsula, in columbia. he is interrogated by cunningham, who wants to know where the rest of the philospher's legacy is. afterward, he meets a captured green beret, roy campbell, who helps him escape to relay an SOS. he learns from sigint and para-medic that he and zero have been blamed for the revolt and the only way to clear their names is by taking down gene. finally, john and roy manage to escape the prison and commandeer a truck. with some information john manages to glean from a patrol base, the two begin to plan what to do.

throughout the month of november, john and roy continued in their efforts to bring the FOX rebellion to an end. along the way, they recruited soldiers from both the red army and FOX to their side, building up a small force. john became acquainted with elisa, a young scientist who seemed to be possessed by her dead twin, and also reunited with some ghosts from his past, namely python, who he thought had died in vietnam, and frank jaeger, now a complete amnesiac going by the codename 'null'. because of what had caused both of them to come back to the battlefield, john gained more hatred for the same political entities that had forced the boss to give up her life. he rescued frank once more from himself, reminding him of who frank had been and of his bond with john. eventually, python, cunningham, and gene all to john's gun, reminding him each step of the way that the government was to blame for the FOX revolt and for the anguish of their soldiers. and while gene did have to die to prevent the launch of metal gear and its nukes, also to clear john's and zero's names, he imparted the idea of a 'haven' for soldiers, never forcing them to again bend to political power. the idea of outer heaven was planted in john's thoughts, spurned onward with the inheritance of funds and resources from gene. john also received a parting gift from elisa before she died in the form a vision of the future, warning him that he would plunge the world into fear.

after the incident was wrapped up, john, roy, and the men they had recruited along the way flew back out to the states to meet major zero and the few remaining members of FOX. zero revealed that he would be disbanding FOX, but that the world still needed a unit like it. when john realized that the men he had formed a bond with, who were loyal to him, would need a new home, he, along with zero, formed a new unit: FOXHOUND.

FOXHOUND is officially recognized as unit with the US army. although john is a founding member, he did not act as its commander for long. instead, roy took his place.

sometime after the establishment of FOXHOUND, zero once again approached john with another offer. this time, it was to join him, sigint, para-medic, and ocelot in a new organization that wanted to see the boss' last wish become a reality. he called them 'the patriots'. although john would not know this until years later, zero actually had no plans initially to ask john to join, content to use his idol status instead as he wanted. it was ocelot who had practically blackmailed zero into getting john to join. john, who believed that he and zero were of the same mind when it came to what the boss wanted, joined without hesitation, looking for something to fight for.

the patriots lasted barely a year before ideological differences began to fracture the group into two sides, those who sided with john (ocelot, EVA) and those who sided with zero (sigint, para-medic). john resented being used as a puppet by zero, who hated above all else the idea of soldiers being used by their leaders for their own gain. zero, fearing that he would lose the influence of big boss over the militant masses, began the les enfants terribles project in an effort to clone a loyal soldier. this proved to be the final straw in john and zero's relationship, john disappearing into the night without telling EVA or ocelot where he was going. immediately after, zero renamed the patriots 'cipher' and went into hiding. ocelot, though he sided with john in all matters concerning his mother's will and how zero had gone power crazy, continued to stay with cipher as a bid to play zero until the very end. EVA did the same, keeping her enemies close.

during the later part of '74, MSF lays down temporary roots on the barranquilla coast in columbia. with no announcement or warning, miller brings two guests back to MSF hq (practically a wooden shack on the beach) to meet with john. one of them, galvez, ends up being a KGB agent who has come to request big boss' help in investigating the CIA suspicious activities in costa rica. paz, galvez's charge, also pleads for MSF's help, as costa rica can't fight the CIA off on their own. john insisted that they not call him big boss, as no one who knew him called him that (10 years later and he still wouldn't accept the title). as an initiative to helping them, galvez is prepared to give MSF an offshore forward operating base, out in the carribean sea. john dismisses the two to talk privately to miller about the whole thing, which he still thinks is fishy. eventually what makes john relent is when galvez plays a tape paz had recorded after being captured by the enemy soldiers in costa rica, a voice john knew very well to be dead recorded on it. curious about how the boss could still be alive, john takes the job, knowing full well that by helping the communists, he is now considered any enemy of the states.

paz is discovered to be alive. while kaz suggests that they get her back to MSF to find out more about cipher, john decides to hold off on the operation until after the inspection. unfortunately, the news gets out to chico, who was shipped off to be with his sister in havannah. he never makes it, sneaking off the ship in cuba and then making the 60-mile hike to camp omega, the blacksite where paz is being held.

chico is captured. he is held captive on camp omega for days, imprisoned in an animal cage with bolts in his achilles tendons.

at 0000 hours, john arrives at camp omega. skull face's trojan horse operation officially gets in motion, with his forces flying out to mother base to attack it. while john is rescuing paz and chico, XOF has already landed on mother base posing as the IAEA. they plant c4 on the struts of motherbase, waiting for word to detonate. on the flight back to motherbase, the medic and john discover the bomb inside of paz's stomach and throw it out of the helicopter. MSF is halfway in the water by the time they fly up. john manages only to rescue a couple soldiers and kaz before morpho's makes a forced escape. they all watch as motherbase falls into the ocean, nothing left of it. paz becomes conscious and tries to warn them of the second bomb implanted in her, but realizes there isn't enough time to remove and throws herself out of the helicopter. the shock and force of the blast kills morpho, chico, and the MSF soldiers inside of the copter, seriously injures john and the medic, and wounds miller. eventually, the medic, john, and kaz are all recovered from the sea and rushed to the barranquilla hospital. john falls into a coma.

john is captured by renegade FOX members, who ambush him out in the field somewhere in africa. 12 hours after being drugged, john wakes up in a cell on the san heironymo peninsula, in columbia. he is interrogated by cunningham, who wants to know where the rest of the philospher's legacy is. afterward, he meets a captured green beret, roy campbell, who helps him escape to relay an SOS. he learns from sigint and para-medic that he and zero have been blamed for the revolt and the only way to clear their names is by taking down gene. finally, john and roy manage to escape the prison and commandeer a truck. with some information john manages to glean from a patrol base, the two begin to plan what to do.

throughout the month of november, john and roy continued in their efforts to bring the FOX rebellion to an end. along the way, they recruited soldiers from both the red army and FOX to their side, building up a small force. john became acquainted with elisa, a young scientist who seemed to be possessed by her dead twin, and also reunited with some ghosts from his past, namely python, who he thought had died in vietnam, and frank jaeger, now a complete amnesiac going by the codename 'null'. because of what had caused both of them to come back to the battlefield, john gained more hatred for the same political entities that had forced the boss to give up her life. he rescued frank once more from himself, reminding him of who frank had been and of his bond with john. eventually, python, cunningham, and gene all to john's gun, reminding him each step of the way that the government was to blame for the FOX revolt and for the anguish of their soldiers. and while gene did have to die to prevent the launch of metal gear and its nukes, also to clear john's and zero's names, he imparted the idea of a 'haven' for soldiers, never forcing them to again bend to political power. the idea of outer heaven was planted in john's thoughts, spurned onward with the inheritance of funds and resources from gene. john also received a parting gift from elisa before she died in the form a vision of the future, warning him that he would plunge the world into fear.

david joins FOXHOUND. when john realizes he is one of the twins, he gives him the codename 'solid snake'. he also imparts on david knowledge of CQC, survival training, and other techniques. sometime between 95 and 97, big boss finally tells david that he is his father.

john and venom decide it was finally time to make their move against the patriots. operation intrude n313 begins to move forward. big boss sends his most trusted soldier, gray fox, to pretend to be captured by venom snake. after which, he sends in solid snake, the patriots' agent, to 'rescue' him. the intention is to kill snake, thus leaving the patriots without a physical presence in the world. unfortunately, david ends up suprassing both john's and venom's expectations. eventually, david kills venom and destroys outer heaven, including the metal gear that was in the works. big boss goes into hiding after that, gray fox following him.

the mercenary war takes place in central asia, where a country known as zanzibar land is trying to gain its independence. big boss, the leftover forces of outer heaven, and gray fox take part in the war. they come out the victors from the fight, claiming some of zanzibar land as their own and build a new fortress there.

the zanzibar land incident takes place after intelligence gets out that they are developing a metal gear and dealing in nuclear weapons. solid snake is sent in once again to disarm the situation. david finds out that big boss is still alive and at the head of the disturbance. eventually he is forced to kill gray fox and burns big boss to death. zanzibar land's fortress and metal gear are destroyed.
hosurs after the incident, a patriots' agent retrieves john's corpse. they revive him through use of nanomachines and keep him in a coma.

john is finally woken from his 15 year coma. he has enough life left in his body to track down zero, whom he brings to arlington cemetary. there he also finds david, who is preparing to commit suicide. john stops him and tells him that he should live whatever life he has left in peace. they share a final smoke together, in which john reveals that he always respected david, not as his son, but as his own man. big boss ends zero's life and then shortly after, dies at the foot of the boss' grave.
